The Webby Awards will be an Online Event

The Webby Awards announced hat The Webby Awards Live Event has moved to an online celebration. The Nominee and Winner Announcement will be rescheduled, and dates will be announced soon.

It is with a heavy heart that we share this news with you: given the impact of COVID-19, our concern for the health and well-being of our community, plus measures public officials are taking, we are moving the 24th Annual Webby Awards event, scheduled for May 11th in New York City to an online celebration.

The 24th Annual Webby Awards Nominees will be announced in the coming weeks with the launch of The Webby People’s Voice public voting. They will release a new announcement schedule “in the days ahead”.

Their plan is to announce the Winners with an internet celebration that will honor the year’s best work, giving the Winners their chance to mark their win in history with a hallmark Webby 5-Word Speech. The celebration will engage their community all over the world and will aim to be as inspiring as the Winners themselves.

The decision to move from an in-person event to an internet celebration is something that a lot of big events are moving towards. It is a good choice, as it can be difficult to enforce social distancing in an space that could be crowded with excited attendees. I cannot help but wonder if virtual events, done online with viewers safely watching and participating at home, will become the new normal.
