Pitch Your Idea to Audible at Podcast Movement 2018

People who attend Podcast Movement 2018, which will take place in Philadelphia on July 23-26, will have a very special opportunity. Attendees will be able to pitch their idea to Audible, who will be accepting submissions from Podcast Movement participants.

Audible is primarily looking for narrative audio with a strong sense of story and a comedic bent. They’re not looking for comedians in a room talking to one another. The pitch should have direction and structure, clearly embrace an audio-first / audio-only experience, and they’re looking to hear about a full and funny world.

Audible is also open to other genres, sketch, one-person shows, personal memoirs, and listening experiences that break new ground in audio entertainment.

To submit and idea, you need:

  • 1-2 page pitch treatment
  • Resume/bio for any attached talent
  • Optional: link to audio sample of proposed series, audio sample of past work and/or sample scripts or related writing.

Submissions must be received by July 13, 2018. A Short List will be selected by July 20, and participants will be invited to pitch their idea to audible executives live at Podacast Movement on July 25, 2018.

As always, it would be a good idea to take a look at the Submission Agreement for full details. It includes, among many other important details, information about what rights submitters give to audible over the content they submitted.

30 for 30 is Accepting Submissions for Original Audio Stories

The 30 for 30 Podcasts Story Workshop is co-presented by IFP and Made In NY Media Center by IFP. 30 for 30 Podcasts is ESPN’s premium series of original sports documentaries. 30 for 30 Podcasts is now seeking submissions.

30 for 30 Podcasts is ESPN’s premium series of original sports audio documentaries. A spin-off of the Oscar and Peabody Award-winning 30 for 30 documentary series, the podcast utilizes original interviews, archival sound, and the textured intimacy of the audio medium to explore compelling characters, teams, incidents, and stores across the sports landscape.

30 for 30 Podcasts Story Workshop is powered by IFP (Independent Filmmaker Project) and the Made in NY Media Center by IFP. The 30 for 30 Podcasts Story Workshop is accepting submissions for original audio story pitches. They are looking for the next great 30 for 30 Podcast.

Successful submissions (between 12-16 proposals) will be selected to participate in a private pitch session with 30 for 30 Podcasts and ESPN producers and development executives, at the Made In NY Media Center on July 24. You can apply on the NY Media Center website.

Some Considerations and Criteria include:

  • Related in some way to sport, competition, athletes, fitness, or sport-like adventure
  • Historical (usually 5+ years)
  • Focused (single event illuminating a larger impact)
  • Sports as a setting to explore off-the-field themes (cultural, racial, societal, etc)
  • New angle on a story you thought you knew
  • Has a larger impact and ripple effect/aftermath

Visit the 30 for 30 Podcast Story Workshop website for more details about the criteria, the ESPN production and process, and more.

Does Anchor Own Your Podcasts?

There has been some debate on the internet about whether or not Anchor owns your podcast. The concern centers around Anchor’s Terms of Service, which was updated on June 21, 2018.

On June 19, 2018, Justin McLachlan (creator of EOS 10) posted a thread on Twitter in which he pointed out something troubling that was in Anchor’s Terms of Service. He included a screenshot of the part he was referring to that included the word “irrevocable”.

In the next tweet in the thread, Justin McLachlan said: “This license survives account termination. @anchor is taking ownership of everything you create that passes through their service.”

On June 20, 2018, Andrew Orr wrote a post on the Mac Observer titled: “Hey, You Know That Anchor App? Turns Out It Owns Your Podcasts.” He included a portion of Anchor’s terms of service in the article, and opined: “This means that Anchor can do whatever it wants with your podcasts, and can also transfer rights to ‘other companies, organizations, or individuals’ it chooses to work with.”

The part of Anchor’s Terms of Service that Andrew Orr was referring to said:

“By submitting User Content through the Services, you hereby do and shall grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, fully paid-up, sublicensable and transferable license to use, edit, modify (including the right to create derivative works of), aggregate, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Content in connection with the operation of the Services, the promotion, advertising or marketing of the Services, or any purposes.”

“You agree that this license includes, without limitation, the right for Anchor to provide, promote, and improve the Services and to make User Content submitted to or through the Services available to other companies, organizations or individuals who partner with Anchor for the syndication, broadcast, distribution, or publication of such User Content on other media and services, subject to our terms and conditions for such User Content use.”

On June 21, 2018, Michael Mignano (Co-Founder/CEO of Anchor) responded to Justin McLachlan’s tweet thread with a thread of his own. Here is one of the tweets in the thread:

In another tweet, Michael Mignano stated: “When you use Anchor, you are granting us a license to distribute your content to our platform as well as others around the world. We’ve clarified the license language to indicate when and how a creator can terminate the license they’ve given us.”

This was followed by two more tweets: “Lastly, Anchor has always aimed to innovate on the medium of audio and make the format more interactive with features like Voice Messages or Cohosts that let users collaborate in real time.” And “To enable these features, the license extends some aspects of its scope to other users so that the users are protected when they choose to collaborate.”

On June 21, 2018, Anchor updated its Terms of Service. The section titled “License Grant” now starts with: You retain all of your ownership rights in your User Content. The word “irrevocable” has been removed.

So, does Anchor own your podcasts? Technically, you still own the podcast content that you put on Anchor. In other words, Anchor is not taking ownership of your podcast and claiming it as their own.

However, by posting your podcast on Anchor, you agree to their Terms of Service, including the part that grants Anchor permission to a “worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free, fully paid-up, sublicensable and transferable license to use, edit, modify (including the right to create derivative works of), aggregate, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, marketing of the service, or for any other purposes.”

It is up to individual podcasters to decide whether or not they like Anchor’s Terms of Service. If you are unsure, perhaps you should take advantage of the part of the Terms of Service that says: “We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions about what our license grant means or how it impacts you.”

Patreon Streamlined Workflow

Patreon announced a new way to manage and track what you deliver to your patrons. It allows creators to say goodbye to spreadsheets, and puts tools into Patreon that can help them keep track of fulfilling what they promised to their patrons.

Patreon asked creators how they define “success”. The answer was that many creators felt that success include three key ingredients: more time to create, deeper connections with their fans, and reliable monthly paychecks.

Now, the benefits you owe to patrons will automatically appear in a digital to-do list so you can easily keep track of all your deliverables. This will help win back the hours you used to spend in spreadsheets so you can get back to creating.

Those who use Patreon can set up the digital to-do list in minutes. The Patreon blog walks you through how to do it. In short, you start by selecting which benefits to track. Then, the next time one of your patrons qualifies for something you’re offering, a new to-do list will appear in the “Benefits” area of your sidebar.

Patreon says that the new streamlined workflow will help ensure that you delight your patrons and never keep them waiting. Running a more dependable membership business will help retain long-term patrons who trust you and look forward to the special things that you deliver them each month.

Podcasters can use the new tools on Patreon to keep track of which patron gets what and at what time. For example, if you offer a benefit to patrons that allows them to receive your podcast earlier than non-patrons, the in-Patreon spreadsheet will help you sort out which patrons to make that available to.

Google Podcasts is Now on Android

Google announced that Google Podcasts is now available on Android. This is something that many podcasters have been wanting. Google published a blog post about it on June 19, 2018.

Today, we’re releasing the Google Podcasts app for Android, available globally in the Play Store. Integrated with the Google Assistant across your devices, and packed with personalized recommendations, Google Podcasts is designed to make it easier than ever for Android users to discover and listen to podcasts. We’re also announcing a partnership with industry experts to improve diversity in podcast creation, and sharing a peek at how AI can help transform podcasting for the better.

With Google Podcasts, you can listen and subscribe to any podcast. Beyond the podcasts you already know, Google Podcasts uses AI to offer recommendations based on your listening habits – such as your interest in sports or true crime, or podcasts from a particular network.

Google Podcast syncs across a variety of Google products, including the Google Assistant. This means that if you listen to a podcast on your phone during your commute home, you can resume it on your Google Home when you arrive.

The blog post includes a section about how podcasters can optimize for Google. To ensure inclusion in the Google Podcasts app, creators should follow Google’s updated developer guidelines. A few new sections have been included in their developer guidelines that cover how to:

  • Prompt Google to index new podcasts as quickly as possible
  • Generate a direct link to your podcast
  • Download the Google Podcasts brand assets for sharing on your website
  • Track analytics that come from Google Podcasts
