Research In Finland: Podcast Listening Takes Time Away From Other Media Consumption

A research conducted by Norstat, on behalf of Podimo, in the spring examined the podcast listening market in Finland. According to the study, podcasts are displacing other forms of media consumption, particularly traditional electronic media. Of the respondents, 37% reported that podcast listening significantly or moderately reduces their radio listening time, while 23% said the same for television viewing.

Johannes Saukko, the Country Manager at Podimo, explained, “Podcast listening in Finland is on the rise, as is the willingness to pay for podcasts. The engagement with podcasts is high, and the time spent on them naturally comes at the expense of other activities. However, podcasts can also be enjoyed in situations where visual content consumption is not feasible, providing listeners with additional opportunities and enhancing their engagement with podcasts.”

Podcasts are predominantly consumed on the go, although many people also listen to them at home. Saukko added, “Tasks like cleaning and other household chores become much more appealing when combined with consuming interesting content.”

Podimo, the podcast and audiobook service that launched in Finland in August last year, has established a strong position in the country this spring. The research indicates that Podimo has caught up with its competitors in terms of subscriber numbers as of February this year.

“Our growth remained strong even after the data collection for the study, and our subscriber numbers are now over 40% higher than at the beginning of the year. While we won’t disclose the exact figures, we are extremely pleased with the development of the Finnish market. We have successfully brought together excellent podcast series in one place for our listeners. Of course, we owe thanks to our fantastic podcasters,” concluded Saukko.

The research also revealed the following findings:

Currently, 16% of podcast listeners subscribe to one or more paid podcast services. 18% have previously subscribed to a paid podcast service but are not currently subscribed.

The most popular podcast genres among listeners are True Crime (43%), Comedy (33%) and News and Current Affairs (29%).

46% of podcast listeners also listen to audiobooks on a monthly basis or more.

The target group for the research comprised nationally representative Finnish individuals aged 15-64. Interviews were conducted through Norstat Finland’s national consumer panel, with data collection taking place from February 12 to February 17, 2023. The study involved a total of 1,063 respondents.

Participation in the study required respondents to listen to podcasts at least once a month. The study was commissioned by Podimo Finland and conducted by Norstat Finland Oy. The survey form was designed by Podimo Finland Oy.

Podimo is a monthly subscription-based podcast and audiobook service that offers a wide selection of exclusive podcasts and Finnish-language audiobooks at an affordable monthly price. Podimo features the best selection of true crime podcasts and entertainment, such as “Murk Joke Tapahtui” (A Murder That Happened), “Gaala” (Gala), “Selven Päin” (Sober), or “Kerhotalo” (Clubhouse), as well as podcasts from popular entertainers like Aki Linnanahde, Sointu Borg, Janni Hussi, and Sara Parikka.

Mumbler Secures €155,000 To Boost The Growth Of Content Creators

Mumbler, the startup that helps content creators monetize their content and grow their audience, has successfully closed its first round of financing through the equity crowdfunding platform StartupXplore.

The operation has been a resounding success, with a total of €155,000 invested and led by entrepreneurs such as Filipe Polo (Talenthackers), Juan Pablo Tejela (Metricool), Luis Diaz del Dedo (Product Hackers), Félix Velasco (Wembley Studios), and Juan Jesús Yubero (LINK Mobility), along with over 100 investors.

The goal of this investment round is two fold. On one hand, a significant portion of the resources will be allocated to attracting more content creators to the platform, aiming to surpass the milestone of 500 creators monetizing their content within Mumbler. On the other hand, Mumbler will continue investing in the development of its product, focusing on three key areas:

  • Providing tools for content creators to continuously grow their audiences
  • Offering additional modes of content monetization. Currently, Mumbler allows creators to charge for their content through subscription and one-time payment formats, and soon it will introduce new monetization avenues.
  • Streamlining the daily tasks of content creators by automating repetitive tasks and enabling them to focus on what truly matters. In this regard, the company is exploring the use of generative Artificial Intelligence as support for content creation and dissemination tasks.

Pol Rodríguez, co-founder of Mumbler and CEO, expressed great satisfaction with the outcome of the financing round: “This round provides us with the resources we need to fuel our growth, as well as access to the expertise and knowledge of many top-tier entrepreneurs who support us.”

In 2022, Mumbler validated its business model, with over 45 content creators generating revenues totaling more than €10,000. Moreover, more than 2,200 transactions were conducted, over 1,800 audio files were uploaded to the platform, and over 300 users paid for some content.

For Mumbler, this financing round represents a significant endorsement that will allow the company to continue working on the development and enhancement of its tool for content creators. Furthermore, a substantial portion of the funding will be allocated to expansion and the acquisition of thousands of new content creators.

The market for content creators encompasses over 300 million individuals worldwide, and Mumbler aims to provide them with the best tool to grow their audience and monetize their content.

iVoox Adds New Monetization Model For Professional Podcasts

The leading platform for podcasts in Spanish, iVoox, launches  an economic delivery system based on the insertion of dynamic advertising within the audios. It is a new advertising format that will allow the sale of direct campaigns through its advertising marketplace, AdVoices.

The company continues to work to be the best option to publish, distribute, and monetize a podcast, and with this new source of income it complements its monetization models, such as direct support from the audience and iVoox Plus subscription, sponsorships of the affiliation, with which more than €3.3M have already been generated for their creators.

Thanks to the new model, which until now has only been available for iVoox Originals, creators who publish their podcast in iVoox will be able to earn money from the advertising inserted in their episodes. They will generate revenue from listens both on the platform and outside, on Spotify, Google Podcast, or Apple Podcasts.

In this way, advertising brands will be able to broadcast audio spots for their campaign in specific podcasts on all the platforms where the creators distribute their content. This new way of advertising is added to the possibility of contracting review campaigns, mentions or dedicated episodes, as they could do up to now.

In this first phase of implementation, ads will be added in a non-intrusive way for the listener. Once the first phase of testing is complete, iVoox will incorporate a new feature whereby creators will be able to add ads in the middle of their episodes, choosing the exact point and amount of ads.

“In a first stage we are testing adding audio ads from ad networks, with the aim of optimizing settings and fill rates that will allow us to end up selling direct campaigns for our creators,” explains Juan Ignacio Solera, founder of iVoox. This is a combination of revenue for podcasters, where on the one hand there is revenue from direct ads through AdVoices and, on the other hand, programmatic network advertising, whereby the podcaster will receive a share of the revenue, as YouTube does.

Quality ads, and always updated

The new dynamic advertising inserted in the episodes will be served on all listening platforms, and takes into account the target and profile of each podcaster’s listeners to deliver ads that are tailored to their values and content. To do this, it uses industry-leading third-party technology to add targeted direct campaigns through AdVoices and programmatic advertising ads from large advertisers.

This ensures quality ad integration for the duration of the campaign, always at the right time and to the right audience, meaning that a podcast will never contain an outdated ad. In addition, it will allow advertising to be included in any of the episodes published, regardless of the date of publication, but taking into account when users listen to them.

This new dynamic advertising model will benefit both large and small creators. Those who meet the requirements will be eligible for monetary distribution, and those who do not will get promotional actions for their podcasts with the aim of helping them to increase their audience on all platforms where they are distributed.

NY Times Bestseller Scott Sigler Joins Realm Podcast Network

Realm, the world’s largest scripted podcast network with over 120 shows and 3500 hours of audio entertainment, announced the signing of author Scott Sigler, a #1 New York Times bestselling author and one of the founding figures of podcast fiction. “Realm is a perfect fit for my work,” Sigler said. “Realm has cultivated a large audience of listeners eager to consume horror and sci-fi audio fiction. I’m excited to put my stories in front of new listeners.”

Sigler is bringing multiple unabridged titles to Realm, including Nocturnal, which is live on the site, and soon to be added titles Infected Trilogy, the Generations Trilogy, Ancestor, Earthcore, and the entire Galactic Football League series.

Nicole Kreutter, Realm’s Head of Network said: “Scott is a pioneer in audio entertainment – he distributed his audio series as podcasts very early on and built an incredible audience base before expanding into traditional book publishing. We’re excited to partner with Scott and introduce his amazing catalog of audio fiction to the Realm audience.”

Sigler, an inaugural member of the Podcast Hall of Fame, is a trailblazer in podcast fiction. In March 2005, three months before Apple added Podcasts to iTunes – Sigler released his novel Earthcore as a free serialized audiobook delivered via RSS. Since then, he has released an episode of his fiction every Sunday. Over 50 million episodes of his work have been downloaded.

Even when signed to Penguin Random House through its Crown and Del Ray imprints, SIgler retained the right to distribute audio editions of his novels as podcasts. “My podcast audience was part of why I landed that major hardcover deal,” Sigler said. “I wanted to make sure my existing fans weren’t locked out when I released new books. Now I can bring those stories and more to Realm’s listeners and continue to grow this community.”

Most of Sigler’s works join the Realm network as completed, serialized podcasts. His weekly podcast, recently named Scott Sigler Slices, delivers an episode of a new story every week and has run nonstop for eighteen years.
